4-H ‘Amazing Race’ with a healthy twist
The 3rd annual St. Martin Parish 4-H Amazing Race contest was held on Saturday, March 22, at Longfellow-Evangeline State Historic Site here. Twenty teams completed an “amazing” run to earn the spot of as top racers.
The contest comprised eight “challenge stations” that teams had to complete before crossing the finish line. Teams completed challenges at each station and were given a clue to lead them to their next station. It’s not just about how fast teams finished, but what team members learned along the way. Scoring included time and points for correct answers turned in at the end of the race.
Challenges included:
•Watching the historic site’s introductory video and answering questions from the video;
•Learning about games that children played in the 1800s with a ball and cup game and “game of graces,” which included physical activity;
•Making a MyPlate Mardi Gras Mardi Gras necklace by figuring out a menu puzzle;
•Making homemade ice cream and learning about the Louisiana dairy industry;
•Creating a “Blue Dog goes healthy” piece of artwork;
•Experiencing a day in the life of the Acadian child by washing clothes by hand and seeding cotton;
•Planting seeds and identifying vegetables;
•And taking a colorful last lap with a “color run.”
Winners of the 2014 4-H Amazing Race with a Healthy Twist in the Junior Cloverbud Division were:
•1st Place – Kaden Allemond and Kaden Dupre (Team Blueberry).
•2nd Place – Isley Thibodeaux, Lia Prados, and Maggie Cramer (Team Strawberry).
Intermediate Division:
1st Place – Gabrielle Latiolais and Kelly Hebert (Team Raspberry).
•2nd Place – Gracie Latiolais and Celeste Frederick (Team Avocado).
•3rd Place – James Haddox, Alex Meche, and Justin Boudreaux (Team Pineapple).
Senior Division:
•1st Place – Miranda Kidder, Jonathon Boudreaux, and Cameron Kidder (Team Papaya).
•2nd Place – Paige Babineaux and Maddie Babineaux (Team Radish).
•3rd Place – Erin Blanchard, Georgie Mae Harris and Peter Harris (Team Beets).
