Roseanne Cash in concert in Lafayette March 9

Jayvee Music Reviews with Jeff Vallet

Rosanne Cash’s first album in more than four years is literally a work of art! Cash wrote the album’s 11 original songs with her longtime collaborator (and husband) John Leventhal, who also served as producer, arranger and guitarist.

With The River & the Thread, Cash turns her attention to other American lives and locations. The album richly evokes the Southern landscape – physical, musical, emotional – and examines the indelible impressions it has made on our own collective culture as well as on herself.

The River & the Thread is sweeping in its breadth, capturing a unique, multi-generational cast of characters – from a Civil War soldier off to fight in Virginia to a New Deal-era farmer in Arkansas to a contemporary Mobile, Ala., couple. Cash tells the stories that we can relate to.

Cash’s voice is so expressive and clear as she takes us all on a special musical journey. When you hear each song, you can feel every expression, every road that the characters are traveling. Check out the song “Night School,” which is a warm yet delicate passage. The keyboard work on “Money Road” is simply amazing.

“If I never make another album I will be content, because I made this one,” says Cash of The River & the Thread, which is a marked departure from her earlier works.

A couple other songs that captured my attention were “Tell Heaven” and “A Feather’s Not A Bird.” Both are unique and memorable.

Rosanne Cash will be in concert at Acadiana Center for the Arts in Lafayette on March 9. I suggest that you go see this amazing artist perform songs from this album as well as her previous hits. The Acadiana Center for the Arts fosters art and culture in Acadiana, hosting over 100 performances that range from singer/songwriters to all-stars, from dance to jazz and theatre.

Behind the scenes, ACA provides art teachers to an eight-parish area and serves as an advocate for arts and education and the professionalism for working artists.
