Butte La Rose et Les Entourage

Bonjour!
New! St. Martin’s first annual Catfish Festival Nov. 8-10 at Catfish Haven, St. Martinville. Cooking contest, Percy Sledge, more next week. www.stmartincatfishfestival.com.
“Pat, Nat and Boo” with fiddler Charles Comeaux had a great time playing the Senior Citizen Day Event in Catahoula. Mais we passed a good time, so much fun we’re booked again next year. When they opened the doors at 8:30 a.m., seniors were slow to come in. It had rained all night and was slow to end. But then weather straightened up people started stirring around and showing up. Lots of plans go into this event to make it a success. Cheers to Ida and Jun.
The gym was lined with tables and chairs set up at angles and were beautifully decorated in Halloween fall colors with decors matching that holiday season. In the midst of the decorations were big pots filled with gumbo that was smell-able through out the gym, potato salad and sweet treats. Every year student’s volunteer to serve the seniors carrying their goodies to their table on big trays. The effort was enjoyed by all. Gumbo was delicious as always. Maybe tasted better because it was sponsored by Sheriff and Mrs. Theriot!
This year’s event began with a ceremony to honor our deceased seniors. We sang “Go Rest High on That Mountain.” Father Fabre and Sheriff Theriot opened the ceremonies with announcements and blessings.
Mrs. Yola Courville was the oldest woman this year at 95 years young. Gabriel “Tu Tu” Latiolais was the oldest gent, 93 years young. Although in her wheel chair, Yola was so happy to see so many people come to greet her. Tu Tu is still very active and like they say, he is a passé partout. (Joke!)
And now for the energetic dancer’s contest. About 15 couples joined in. Top dancers went to Camille and Lillian Blanchard, second to Newton and Della Dupuis, and third to Ralph and Margaret Albert. Heck, to our surprise even Jackie and Margaret Segura danced. Clifton and Iva Mae Theriot have been lovers and sweethearts for 64 years winning them the oldest married couple award. There were other award presentations, too many to mention all.
Dudley “Cheese” and Anna Theriot from Parks blessed me with a sack and a half of gold in the form of okra last week. Didn’t take me long to run home and wash and cut and cook and freeze. I told Anna I planted okra four times this year and I think of the few that popped out of the ground, only one had three flowers. So she felt sorry for me. Cheese also gave me a few aloe vera plants. I finally figured to fertilized mine with Triple 13. Works great. Anna and her cousin Maggie Hebert visiting here from Alaska came by for a visit. She even gave me pecans.
Mais y’all say bonjour to Vallee Allemond and Pauline Lasseigne from Henderson. Pauline shared some of her cooked okra with me. Mais she cooks good.
Cecile Albert carried to me a bucket of crepe myrtles already rooting in water last week. I planted about 24 of those, but mosquitoes are giving me hell. I don’t like to use the gadget with the Off too much because of the chemicals. I’d have to be using it every day.
I pulled out my electric heaters, cleaned them out and am ready for the cold weather. No, not blizzard winter! Just a little cold. Since I barricaded the attic fan earlier this year, my bill has dropped up to 15 dollars per month. It is a help. Vielle Femme does not help me at all. Think I’ll send her fish at the canal, maybe bring home catfish.
Bien merci, amètie,

–Cousine Hélène
