Butte La Rose
Bonjour et Joyeaux Noel à Tout!
The Arnaudville VFW, Post 5153 – and I’m sure all other the VFWs all around here – wishes every one “Merry Christmas.” Twenty-plus-year Auxiliary president Lorna Mills and members had their annual Christmas banquet Dec. 10 at their post home in Arnaudville. A ceremony honored and gave recognition to attending veterans, law enforcement and fire department personnel, medics – the list goes on – as well as friends and relatives. Attendance was great. There was not an empty chair available. Friendship was overflowing. The Arnaudville VFW was always known for their loyal and active membership.
Several speakers and special guest spoke at the podium, including everyone’s favorites, Capt. and Mrs. Clay Higgins from St. Landry Parish. He emphasized the big change in our United States that’s come over our way of life in his 54 years of living – changes we can expect to continue.
Those of us who I say have earned our “senior wings,” per se, have seen an even bigger change. Remembering not needing locks on our doors? To hear this officer speak rushes old memories of our couch-couch days. Wood burning stove days. What was yours then, stayed yours. Now you need cameras surrounding your house and yard. If you defend your property against a malefactor, will they have a gun or knife in their pocket to use against you?
To hear this hard-core, man-of-the-law speak of his history in law enforcement shows us where his loyalty to his people and his heart is. Big steps to lead! I forget to do it and always regret not bringing along a note pad to make notes on during these meetings. And as well jot down a few of the many folks I talk with.
I got to say hey to Don and Lucy Fredrick. Also Paul and Betty Devillier. Betty was helping serve the delicious cooking. Of course the food served at their meetings is always delicious. I had an extra scoop of yams with pecans and extra bread. While the cupcake cookie tray was being passed around the tables, one low enough for me to reach, I had an extra one of those too. Thank you all!
Louella O. Taylor was from Arnaudville. Sad to say she passed away Friday, Nov. 20, in Lafayette. Her Mass of Christian Burial was held for her Monday, Nov. 23, at St. John Francis Regis Catholic Church in Arnaudville. Entombment was at St. John Francis Regis Cemetery in Arnaudville. Louella’s very special ceremony was by Rev. Keenan Brown and Father Brian Taylor who officiated at her Funeral Mass. Scriptures were read by Monica Meche. Gift Bearers were read by Kiri Meche and Kori Hebert.
Louella is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Taylor Taylor, and three daughters. She was not only an amazing mom but also was a wonderful granny to six beautiful grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Lou loved spending the days with her family, especially the love of her life, Taylor. Monica wrote in Louella’s memorable scripture of moms strength and courage. She had a heart as big as Texas. She was always happy to help anyone and everyone. She will forever be sadly missed, but their love for their mom will always remain. Merry Christmas to all my readers. And I want to thank everyone of you who have welcomed me into your home and have kept up with my column. I hope I have not offended anyone. And I hope to see you all again next year. So; Joyeaux Noel à tout les Cajun et Cousin! Amètie.
