Butte La Rose
Bonjour!
The spirit of Christmas is in the air everywhere. Very good to see are the lights at the pontoon bridge. That means we got our bridge back.
There’s a good chance Santa will not get lost when he comes zooming through the Atchafalaya Basin swamps Christmas Eve to deliver children’s presents. All he’s gotta do is be on the lookout for those pontoon lights. When he’ll come through he should have alligators pulling his sleigh. There is a chance those reindeer might get lost, but those gators won’t because they know every inch of the Basin – even swim way out here to see the lights.
There still is a little work that needs doing around and under the pontoon to tie up loose ends. When I crossed over this morning going to St. Martinville, I saw a gooseneck lowboy truck by the bridge with heavy machinery. I think that is to do work under the bridge and hopefully won’t need to close it down again for any length of time.
Now Herman Dupuis Road is lit up with festive Christmas colors of green and red flags on every electrical pole starting at the pontoon up to I-10. It gives a whole lot of meaning to the holiday season and so pretty those flying in the wind along the highway as we drive by.
I came across my old flyer from Dec. 23, 2010, that read “First Annual Butte La Rose Children’s Christmas Show” held at the fire station. It was a lot of fun. Someone had given to me several boxes of Christmas decorations and the children’s moms had done all the decorating of the fire station. Everyone pitched in and brought goodies and treats. Crafts and toys had been donated and were given to the children to take home.
Sheriff and Mrs. Ronny Theriot read Christmas stories. He had given the children little badges. A lot of people came including my grandchildren and enjoyed this celebration. As it turned out I had no place to store the decorations so I donated them to other people. Everyone went their separate ways the following year so that ended the annual children’s Christmas party.
I heard some Butte La Rose couples say they’d like to bring back their annual Mardi Gras. So there you go, Children’s Christmas Show, Mardi Gras, including their cook-offs, boat activities and maybe a July 4th something or other. It is a lot of work. Hunt down a few sponsors to help. And of course a bunch of hard working dedicated committee of people.
I went to Guitar Center in Lafayette for a tuner but what I wanted was not in stock. The cashier took cash giving me a charge card to pay mailing it to me. I gave my address as Herman Dupuis Road and zip. His computer showed my town as Butte La Rose. I should have left it not giving Breaux Bridge. So would be nice to have Butte La Rose as our postal town. I’ll send off my Christmas cards and give my return address Butte La Rose 70517. We have unique addresses here like the Atchafalaya River Road. I’ve read that your street or PO address and zip is all that’s needed. No town necessarily needed.
Merry Christmas! Joyeaux Noel!
