BB edges New Iberia in defensive battle

Blocked extra point is difference

Breaux Bridge – It wasn’t pretty, but a win is a win and the Breaux Bridge Tigers were able to come out on top of a 7-6 defensive battle with the New Iberia Yellow Jackets of District 3-5A in the 2015 season opener here last Friday.
The difference proved to be a blocked extra point and the credit for that goes to junior Sabarian Alexander who also picked off two New Iberia passes.
Sophomore quarterback Julian Leon started for the Tigers and completed three of his first four pass atrtempts in a drive that reached the New Iberia 17 before petering out.
But Leon’s next four tosses missed the mark and his fifth attempt was picked off and returned to the BB 5 to set up New Iberia’s only score. Aaron Bean, who led the Jackets with 37 yards on 15 carries, took it in at the 2:46 mark of the first period.
Linebacker Kirkland Joseph intercepted a New Iberia pass early in the second quarter to set the Tigers up at the Jacket 30 and two plays later Lee scored on a 27-yard run. Bailey Thibodeaux added the PAT to put Breaux Bridge up by 7-6.
New Iberia’s next possession was cut short by Alexander’s first interception near midfield but penalties pushed the Tigers back to their 20 and the short series ended with a punt.
The BB defense stopped the Jackets at the Tiger 31 on New Iberia’s next series and the half ended minutes later.
New Iberia came up short on two field goal attempts in the second half and Breaux Bridge’s best drive of the night ended when sophomore running back Logan Bossier fumbled the ball away on first and goal at the NI 3.
With senior running back Ruben Hypolite sidelined with a minor injury Daniel Lee and Bossier led the BB runing attack with a combined 94 yards rushing.
Senior Drake Guidry, who relieved Leon midway into the opening stanza, finished with five completions in seven attempts for 43 yards.
Jude Boudreaux led the Tiger receiving corps with four catches for 48 yards.
The Bridge’s offense was plagued by fumbles (five with one lost) and 13 penalties.
The Tigers play at home again this Friday, hosting the Notre Dame Pioneers who defeated Lagrange 24-6 in their opener.
