Sometimes it seems like the quickest way to start an argument in St. Martinville is to say the words “Mardi Gras Parade.” It definitely had that effect at the Wednesday, Jan. 13, special meeting of the City Council, and things have only gotten worse since then.

The town council here voted to call a special election to approve the rededication of sales tax revenues.
At its Monday Jan. 11 meeting, the council scheduled a public vote for April 9. Mayor Sherbin Collette said that the measure, which will not change tax rates, will save residents from sewer bill rate hikes.

Residents of the Atchafalaya Basin were breathing a collective sigh of relief on Monday. According to the latest information, the Morganza Spillway will not have to open for the current high-water event in the Mississippi River.

School Board Approves Parks zone change

As part of its ongoing desegregation battle and effort to keep Catahoula Elementary School open, the St. Martin School Board last week agreed to a demand by attorneys with the NAACP to modify the attendance zone governing students attending Parks Primary and Middle schools.
