Breaux Bridge off to a hot start in district

Breaux Bridge got off to a hot start in the District 5-4A basketball race, knocking of parish rival St. Martinville on Jan. 19 and Abbeville on Friday. In another league game on Monday night it was Breaux Bridge 58, Westgate 54.
The string of league victories boosted The Bridge’s season record to 16-7 overall and 3-0 in district.
Trailing 32-24 at halftime, the Tigers exploded for 23 points in the third period and held off a SM rally in the fourth quarter to take a satisfying 64-59 victory.
Breaux Bridge came out on top in another tough 5-4A game, notching a 52-49 over a stubborn band of Abbeville Wildcats on Friday.
St. Martinville bounced back into the win column on Friday, defeating the Lafayette Lions 58-55 in a non-district game. The ’Ville then notched its first district win on Monday, topping Abbeville 68-64 in a heated game that went into overtime.
The Tigers outscored the Wildcats 8-4 in the extra period to clinch the victory.
Four SM players reached the double digits with Tyquan Marshall leading the way with 22 points. Jayvion Mitchell and Javante Walker scored 13 apiece while Devin Bernard finished with 11 points.
St. Martinville now stands at 17-9 overall and 1-1 in league play.
Cecilia opened its 5-4A run with a 51-49 loss to Abbeville on Jan. 19 and fell to Westgate on Friday by 78-35. The Bulldog record slipped to 4-14 and 0-2.
