Scammers target St. Martinville utility customers
Mayor Thomas Nelson has issued a warning about a telephone scam targeting customers of St. Martinville’s electric utility system.
These scammers have claimed to be employees of CLECO who are working with the City of St. Martinville to try to prevent utility cutoffs, Nelson said.
The caller demands customers provide them with credit card or bank account numbers to avoid a utility cut off.
“This is a fraud,” Nelson said. “If anyone receives such a call, and if your caller ID shows the number from which the call originated, please contact the St. Martinville Police Department (337) 394-3001 and give them the number.”
In any case, do not give your credit card or banking numbers over the phone.
