Seniors treated by St. Martin Sheriff

Linda Cooke

Twice a year, Sheriff Ronny Theriot of St. Martin Parish sponsors a lunch for the seniors of lower St. Martin Parish. This year the winter lunch was held in the Stephensville Elementary School gym on Saturday, Jan. 31.
Sheriff Theriot welcomed guests and gave the opening prayer. The gumbo lunch, potato salad, cookies and soft drinks were served to a large number of guests on long tables decorated in a Mardi Gras theme.
While guests enjoyed the lunch, they listened to several speakers. Representing Acadian Ambulance On Call Medical Alert System was Steve Landry who explained about the latest ways his company can respond to emergency calls. For more information about the On Call program, call (800) 259-1234.
The Better Business Bureau of Acadiana had a table of literature while Robin Stokes, coordinator/facilitator of Savvy Seniors and Pursuit of Ethics for the BBB, spoke at length to guests about the increasing number and style of telephone scams aimed at seniors.
A number of senior lunch guests chimed in with stories of the phone calls they have been receiving. Ms. Stokes gave everyone a Anti Scam Pledge which listed a number of Don’ts for seniors.
She also told guests about the new Savvy Senior program which offers free presentations for seniors and their caregivers. A 45 minute program is offered at no cost to churches and/or other groups. For more information call Robin Stokes at (337) 989-8726.
Other healthcare fraud information was given to guests along with information about SHIP – Senior Health Insurance Program.
The lunch ended with Bingo games and the winners received many door prizes. It was especially nice to see many new seniors in attendance at the lunch. New in age and new in the area.
Many thanks to Sheriff Theriot and to the cooks Roxy Broussard and Judy Roberts and to all the helpers for the wonderful lunch. Thank you to Principal Staton for the use of his school’s gym.
