Local students get excited about reading

By Katherine Miller

CROWLEY – Mrs. Richard and Mrs. Guchereau’s third grade classes are getting excited about reading. Recently, nine of their students won Book Adventure Awards,
which are part of a reading incentive program that the teachers incorporated into their classrooms this past school year.

Mrs. Jennifer Richard, was the first to implement this reading incentive program into her classroom. “I used Book Adventure, which is a free reading program that works on a point system. Students who finished assignments early were to read their “testing” book. They also ready these books during DEAR time, which stands for Drop Everything and Read.”

After the Christmas break, Mrs. Guchereau implemented the program into her own classroom.

Students in both classes became excited to read, and were quickly reading books at home and testing on them. Students were rewarded throughout the year when they reached individual goals. For example, 100 points earned them a pencil or bookmark, 500 points earned them the right to sit anywhere or a free homework pass, 750 points earned them the privilege of being teacher of the day or thirty minutes of free time, and 1000 points earned them a McDonald’s or Burger King treat. Class prizes were given as well, and as class goals were reached, they received a pizza party. “This is something that can be done during the summer at home,” Richard said. The website is located at www.bookadventure.com. She added that the program is free and extremely user friendly.

While the kids are home for the summer, this program would be an awesome and rewarding way to keep their minds active during the summer break.
