Transfers to change black/white ratios

Henri C. Bienvenu

The student assignment changes that will go into effect with the 2016-17 school session are projected to move the racial makeup of several schools closer to the target set in desegregation litigation.
The object of the desegregation suit regarding student assignment is to have all schools mirror the overall black-white ratio of total enrollment as closely as possible.
In St. Martin Parish the 8,422 students enrolled in public schools as of Oct. 1, 2015, included 4,289 white (50.7%), 3,892 black (46.2%) and 261 other (3.1%).
Generally, desegregation guidelines allow a +/- variation of 15% from these figures.
The changes approved as a result of the lawsuit are projected to result in the following racial ratio adjustments:
•Catahoula Elementary – Currently 92% white/7% black. With changes, 77% white/23% black.
•St. Martinville Primary – Currently 26% white/71% black. Change to 27% white/70% black.
•St. Martinville Jr. High – Currently 26% white/70% black to 35% white/61% black.
•Parks Primary – Currently 72% white/26% black to 70% white/27% black.
•Parks Middle – Currently 62% white/36% black to 59% white/40% black.
•BB Primary – Currently 34% white/66% black to 40% white/59% black.
•BB Elementary – Currently 31% white/67% black to 39% white/59% black.
•BB Jr. High – Currently 29% white/70% black to 36% white/63% black.
