The St. Martin School Board's wish list

The St. Martin School Board last week unveiled a “scope of work and expenditure breakdown” for the $64.5 million bond proposal members hope parish voters will approve in an April 9 special election.
Board members have stressed that the bonds could be financed over the next 20 years without any increase in the current level of millage taxes levied on property.
The latest proposal follows the issuance of $30 million in bonds approved in 2009 and another $40.35 million OKed by voters in 2013.
Approval would allow the board to continue with a sweeping array of improvements at schools and facilities throughout the parish.
If the bond issue is approved, the board is bound by an agreement it made relating to a desegregation lawsuit to undertake major improvements to the Breaux Bridge Jr. High campus, with just over $6.2 million earmarked for that project, considerably more than is budgeted for any of the 15 other campuses.
In addition to the monies allocated to the individual schools, the board plans to spend $14.2 million for projects designated as benefiting the entire parish, including a new office annex adjacent to the new Administrative Office in Breaux Bridge, improvements at the JCEP facility and new Career Center, heating/cooling and roof repairs at various schools, technology and food services.
The plan was adopted during last Wednesday’s meeting without discussion, although it is obvious that members conducted extensive collaboration with principals, architects and engineers.
