St. Martin ACT scores improve

Henri C. Bienvenu

Results of the Spring 2015 ACT administered to all Louisiana high school juniors were released last week by the state Department of Education and St. Martin Parish students recorded strong improvement.
ACT originally stood for American College Testing when the test was introduced in 1959. But the name has evolved into simply ACT. The test covers English, math, science and reading/social studies.
School board members got an early look at the results during last week’s monthly board meeting.
The parish results for the class of 2016 showed that 58 percent of the new seniors scored 17 or higher on the test (the maximum score is 36). This was up from 52 percent a year ago.
Students scoring 17 or higher by schools were:
•Breaux Bridge High - 63% (up from 55%)
•Cecilia High – 60% (up from 56%)
•St. Martinville High – 52% (up from 43%)

Parish students also showed continued improvement at the upper end of the test with 66 students scoring 25 or higher, compared to 52 students in 2014 and 28 in 2013.
