SLEMCO warns customers about energy bill scams
SLEMCO customers have reported receiving phone calls from someone pretending to be from the company, warning them their electricity will be turned off if a payment is not made immediately to the person calling.
This is a scam and you should not give anyone making such a call money or any of your account information.
“SLEMCO bills all customers through either regular US Postal Service mail, or via email, if a customer has signed up for email bill notifications,” said SLEMCO Communications Manager Mary Laurent.
“We do not phone any customer to tell them their account is scheduled for disconnection and demand payment.”
SLEMCO sends out all bills, notices and any other issues concerning payment for monthly bills in writing, to the member – either through the postal service or email. Either way, it will be in writing and not by phone.
“There are times when we may call our consumers for one reason or another, but it will not be to request payment to avoid a disconnection,” Laurent said. “All notifications concerning monthly electric bills are handled in writing.”
