Sheriff Ronny Theriot's gumbo lunch brings lower St. Martin seniors together

There was a time, some years back, when it was more likely than not a comment might be made that, “I didn’t know Belle River was even in St. Martin Parish!”

Belle River was something of a No-man’s land, seemingly neither in one parish nor the other. Stephensville and Four-mile Bayou were almost as neglected.

Things are changing, thank goodness. The three communities now have fire departments, a B-ranked school (one of the best in the parish), multiple businesses, growing subdivisions and campsite developments, two recreation parks – and thanks to Sheriff Ronny Theriot and Catholic Charities, a once-a-month distribution of commodities for seniors.

Twice a year for the past few years, the sheriff’s office trucks over to the Stephensville Elementary School gym a luncheon of gumbo, potato salad, sweets, soft drinks, along with Bingo cards and lots and lots of terrific door prizes. Hardly a person goes home without winning something. An ever increasing number of residents attend the lunch, which is a wonderful meet-and-greet opportunity for seniors.

This year, on Saturday, Jan. 18, the sheriff himself was unable to attend the luncheon but in his stead were Deputies Daisy Trimble, community services liaison, and Katryn Nelson with Crime Stoppers, Shirley Akers from District Attorney Phil Haney’s office, Lt. Col. Terry Guidry, director of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, plus Deputy Michael Roberts and local Deputy Ricky Acosta.

Trimble, Nelson and Guidry spoke briefly in welcome and explained their individual duties. When requested, Akers has agreed to arrange a meeting of local veterans to be held in lower St. Martin at a yet to be announced date.

Thanks to the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s office for this wonderful winter gumbo.
