Property crimes rise in Henderson
Resident’s complaints about a rash of vehicle break–ins were addressed by the town council at it’s March,10 meeting. Council member Samantha LeBlanc reported that she had received questions from constituents about the problem. Chief of Police Leroy Guidry said that there had been an increase in property crimes throughout the parish.
Part of the problem, Guidry said, is the short staffing of police departments in all small towns in the parish. He said that residents need to realize that the police can’t stop the problem alone. Many of the offences take place when vehicles or structures are left unlocked, he said, and residents need to take measures to protect their property. Council member Jody Meche suggested that it may be time to form a neighborhood watch group in Henderson.
Mayor Sherbin Collette said that he was proud that Henry Guidry Memorial Park is being put to much more use for special events than in the past. He thanked the parish and president Guy Cormier for their prompt help with a dainage issue in the park, ahead of the March 14 Heartstrings and Angel wings Gumbo Cook– off.
Collette also reported that consultants had been retained to help devise a strategy to improve storm water run-off in town.
