Most St. Martin candidates go unchallenged

Ken Grissom

Out of 50 local elective offices whose terms are expiring, you’re only going to have to vote on 19 of them. The rest will march into office unopposed.
After the qualifying period Aug. 20-22, candidates were locked-in. Those with no opposition were, in essence, elected.
Only one of the 10-member St. Martin School Board faces election Nov. 4. District 2’s Wanda Babin is opposed by Raymond J. Lee of St. Martinville.
An open seat on the board being vacated by Robert Hollier in District 6 attracted only one candidate albeit a formidable one, Burton Dupuis of Breaux Bridge, former school superintendent and principal, among numerous other achievements.
Hollier, who served one term, is stepping down for health reason.
Of the four incumbents seeking to return to the Breaux Bridge City Council, only one faces opposition. Howard “Doc” Alexander is opposed by Michael J. “T-Mike” Breaux for the District B seat.
Two hopefuls in the race for the District A seat on the Breaux Bridge Council vacated by Terry Thibodeaux are Gereline “Geri” Frederick and Brenda Castille Hobbs.
The long-serving Thibodeaux cited work obligations as his reason for not running again.
The race for mayor of Breaux Bridge drew three candidates to replace Jack Dale Delhomme, retiring after four terms as mayor and a term on the City Council. The candidates are former City Councilman Ricky J. Calais, Parish Councilwoman Jill Hebert, and businessman George J. Williams.
The U.S. Senate race, on the other hand, has a crowded field of nine, including among the lesser-knowns, Wayne Ables of Breaux Bridge, a Democrat.
In town and villages where council members run at large, the top however-many-seats-are-open vote-getters are the winners.
