St. Martin Parish public school students and teachers will have two less holidays for Mardi Gras under the 2016-17 school calendar approved last week by the school board.
The calendar was adopted without discussion after a staff report showed that 58.2 percent of the employees favored the proposal over an alternate calendar.
This year schools were closed for the entire week of Mardi Gras, but next year the holidays will run only from Monday through Wednesday.
Other holidays – Labor Day, Thanksgiving week, Christmas and New Year, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day – will remain unchanged.
The Easter break will be a little different, however. This year schools will be closed for Good Friday and the week after Easter. Under the 2016-17 calendar the Easter holiday will begin the Monday before Easter with schools reopening on the Tuesday after Easter.
Schools will also be closed on Tuesday, Nov. 8, for the presidential election.
Students will get several other days off when parent-teacher conferences and professional development sessions are held. That includes Friday, Oct. 14, Monday, Nov. 7, and Thursday-Friday, March 16-17.
Teachers will return to school on Monday, Aug. 8 for three days of professional development while students will report on Thursday, Aug. 11.
High school graduation ceremonies are scheduled for Friday, May 12, 2017.
