Killer of police chief's mother-in-law pleads to manslaughter

Darrin Duhon, 32, on Friday pleaded to a reduced charge of manslaughter in the death of former Breaux Bridge Chief of Police Charlie Thibodeaux’s 91-year-old mother-in-law, Mildred Hebert. He is scheduled to be sentenced April 7.
Duhon also pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted manslaughter for shooting Thibodeaux and his wife, Emmaline, during a domestic argument in September 2012.
After months of hospitalization, Hebert died of complications from the injury she received in the attack in the Thibodeaux home.
Duhon, who is married to one of Hebert’s granddaughters, was originally charged with three counts of attempted first degree murder. When Hebert died in January 2013, a St. Martin Parish grand jury indicted Duhon for first degree murder.
Manslaughter carries a penalty of up to 40 years at hard labor.
