I-10 widening proposal explained
At a public meeting in the Henderson Recreation Building on May 28, DOTD representatives presented a proposal for improvements to I-10. The proposal involves the section of the interstate from LA 347 (the Henderson-Cecilia exit) to the Atchafalaya Floodway Bridge.
The part of the project discussed in Henderson is the first 2.4 miles of three adjoining sections of the whole federally–funded project. Together, they will result in the addition of a third west-bound lane and a complete full-depth replacement of the surface for the approximately 15 mile stretch from the I-49 (Evangeline Thruway) exit in Lafayette eastward to the Atchafalaya bridge. Widening will be within the existing right-of-way.
According to the DOTD proposal, two lanes each way will remain open during the project. If any temporary lane closures are needed, they will be conducted at night.
A schedule for the proposed work is not final at this time, but officials expect it to be done in 2016 and they said that this section should require 90 to 120 days to complete.
The estimated average daily traffic of 52,240 vehicles for 2015 is expected to rise to an estimated 70,350 by 2035.
DOTD representatives said that they welcome input from interested parties. Comments can be mailed to: Louisiana DOTD/Grand Point Highway, Environmental Engineering Administrator, Sec. 28 P.O. Box 94245, Baton Rouge, LA 70804–9245.
