Evangeline Campus will offer Adult Ed

Beginning in fall 2016, South Louisiana Community College will expand its Adult Education Program to St. Martinville at its new Evangeline Campus. Registration will be held Tuesday, Aug. 9.
“Throughout the parish, there is a growing population of adults who lack the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively compete in today’s workforce,” said Andre Perez, director of Primary Partnerships and Special Programs at SLCC. “The expansion of this program for the communities the college serves translates into a better prepared workforce that leads to economic stability, not only for the individual, but for the community as a whole.”
Adult Education programs traditionally serve people, who for a variety of reasons, may not have been able to fully complete high school graduation requirements. It also applies to those who have limited education in certain content areas, like reading and math.
“Adult Education programming is specifically designed to meet people where they are, bringing them to new heights with regards to knowledge and skills attainment or enhancement. We welcome students 16 years of age or older who require assistance in preparing for and passing the HiSET, the high school equivalency test,” said Connor Chauveaux, interim coordinator for Adult Education.
Potential students include those who are preparing to take the HiSET exam or those wishing to gain additional skills in math and reading. Classes include all core subjects seen on the HiSET: math, science, social studies, English, and writing.
“Adult Education classes are designed to promote an atmosphere of learning that caters to the needs of the student by taking a holistic approach to teaching and learning, all within a non-intimidating environment,” said Chauveaux.
“We also bring in speakers from the community to host guest presentations with topics ranging from employability skills to financial literacy. Students not only take part in traditional classes, they are also encouraged to take advantage of small group and one-on-one tutoring sessions with their instructors.”
Enrollment for the Adult Education Program in St. Martinville at the new Evangeline Campus will be held Tuesday, Aug. 9 from 8:45 until 9 a.m. Students will need to bring a copy of their social security card and a picture ID.
Students 16-years-old and 17-years-old need to contact the Adult Education Office at 337-892-2360 before registering to check on registration requirements for youths.
Classes are free – the only cost incurred by students is that of the actual HiSET exam.
Classes will begin Monday, Aug. 15 and will run Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 11:50 a.m., with tutoring available in the afternoons. Please visit www.solacc.edu/academics/adult-education or call 337-892-2360 for more information.
