Details of the School Board's plan

Henri C. Bienvenu

The school board looked to Lafayette demographer Mike Hefner for assistance is drawing up the attendance zone associated with the latest proposal for the possible future of Catahoula Elementary.
Hefner has advised both the board and Parish Government on reapportionment issues over the years.
Hefner explained that the proposed zone boundary would run south along the east side of LA 347/Cemetery Hwy to Gerald/Chuck Streets and then east to the Francis Loop area.
It would run north along LA 347/Resweber Hwy from St. Martinville to the Boon Lasseigne Road.
The new zone would only apply to students in grades 2-5. Catahoula students in preK-1 would remain in Catahoula, but students in grades 6-8 would be transferred to St. Martinville Jr. High.
Students in the expanded zone currently attending St. Martinville Primary School (grades 2-5) would be transferred to Catahoula.
Based on current demographics, such a plan would result in approximately 73 Catahoula students (mostly white) moving to SMJH and about 39 black students moving to the Catahoula school.
A detailed map of the proposed new zone will appear in next week’s issue of the Teche News.
