Citywide Garage Sale a big success for Downtown Merchants Assn.

With a mammoth organizing effort before them since taking over the Breaux Bridge Citywide Garage Sale in July, the Downtown Merchants Association rose to the occasion with unqualified success as sponsors of the event this past weekend. With venues in Veteran’s Park on Berard Street and Parc des Ponts on Bayou Teche, the streets were filled with shoppers looking for that really good deal! DMA President, Coatney Raymond said that despite light rain on Saturday and Tropical Storm Karen, which may have dissuaded some out-of-town vendors from showing up, the overall turnout easily met their expectations. Raymond said that the event drew somewhere in the neighborhood of 10,000 to 12,000 people. She added that 80 vendors had set up booths between the two sites and that over 100 individual garage sale sites were sprung up throughout the city. Those who reported, said they were extremely pleased with their sales. To keep the momentum going, Raymond says the DMA will be putting on another event next month: A benefit to raise money for spaying and neutering services provided by St. Martin Parish Animal Services. The Beaucoup des Chiens will be held Sunday, Nov. 10, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in Veterans Park. There will be photos with pets and owners, food and drink booths, a “Yappy Hour” with local veterinarians, a police dog demonstration by the St. Martin Sheriff’s Office, topped off by the crowning of royalty, Le Krewe de Chiens Cajuns.
