ST. MARTINVILLE MAN ARRESTED ON NUMEROUS DRUG-DOG FIGHTING-WEAPONS CHARGES

Early on Friday, Aug. 7, following a thorough investigation, Narcotic Agents along with S.E.R.T. (Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team) Members with the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at a residence located in the 500 block of Gov. Mouton St. in St. Martinville.
Following the execution of the warrant, Agents recovered a firearm, crack cocaine, marijuana, synthetic cannabinoids, pills and drug paraphernalia used to package and sell illegal drugs. Also located at the property was evidence of dog fighting, along with equipment believed to have been used to train dogs to fight.
Nine dogs were discovered at the location and some had serious scarring believed to have been caused by dog fighting and, subsequently; all nine animals were removed from the property and are being cared for by a rescue group.
Joseph Gilliam, aka “DIX”, 40, St. Martinville, was arrested on the following charges:
Dog Fighting
Creation or Operation of a Clandestine Laboratory for the unlawful manufacture of a controlled dangerous substance
Illegal Carrying of Weapon while in possession of a CDS
Possession of a firearm by a person convicted of certain felonies
Possession of Schedule I CDS (Marijuana)
Possession with the intent to Distribute Schedule I CDS (Synthetic Cannabinoids)
Possession with the intent to Distribute Schedule II CDS (Crack Cocaine)
Possession of Schedule III CDS (Hydrocodone)
Possession of Schedule V CDS (Liquid Codeine)
Possession of Legend Drug
Transactions involving proceeds from drug offenses
Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
Violation of Uniformed Controlled Dangerous Substance Law in a School Zone
Following his arrest Joseph Gilliam was booked into the St. Martin Parish Correctional Center on the above charges. At the time of this release, no bond had been set.
