Man dies in Breaux Bridge area fire

Identity being withheld pending fire marshal's investigation

Back-to-back fires on Saturday and Sunday nights had volunteer firemen, from surrounding communities, battling blazes that destroyed two homes and left one person dead.

St. Martin Parish Fire District Coordinator Brian Castille, confirmed Monday that approximately 30 firemen from Breaux Bridge, Henderson, Cecilia, Arnaudville and Parks responded to an 11:45 p.m. fire at 1276 Bergeron Road, Breaux Bridge.

Castille said that firefighters fought the blaze that consumed the single-family home, for roughly one and a half hours before bringing it under control. Firemen remained on the scene until 5 a.m. the following morning to put out hot spots.

The state fire marshal is currently investigating and has not yet determined the cause, only that the fire started in the living area.

The owner of the residence, identified as Kylie Knott, and a child were transported to St. Martin hospital where they were treated and released.

A male occupant of the dwelling died in the blaze and his identity has not been released by the state fire marshal, Castille said.

The following evening at approximately 8 p.m. 35 firefighters, mostly from the same units that had been called out the night before, responded to a fire at a single family residence located at 1142 Ches Broussard Road, Breaux Bridge.

The fire, which started in a nearby vehicle, ignited the dwelling, owned by Jessica Hamilton, causing extensive property damage but no injuries. It took 45 minutes to bring the blaze under control. Firemen remained on the scene until 10:30 p.m. to put out hot spots.
