Convicted child molester tries suicide, fails
A 57-year-old man just convicted on multiple counts of aggravated incest stood up in court and sliced at his throat and wrists with a sharp object here Thursday afternoon. Sources say the wounds are not life-threatening.
He was not identified by officials but witnesses said he is Robbie Ray Frith of the 200 block of Darrel Street in St. Martinville.
St. Martin Parish Assistant District Attorney Chester Cedars told KATC-TV the jury had already been excused when the man stood up and said he would kill himself before going to jail.
He immediately attempted to make good on his threat, using a small razor blade, Cedars said.
Frith was on trial before Judge Lori Landry on charges he sexually molested several juveniles.
Acadian Ambulance responded with an ambulance and a medical evacuation helicopter, which landed on the St. Martinville Senior High School football field. Frith was taken away in the ambulance rather than the helicopter.
No official word on his condition but sources say the injuries did not require hospitalization.
