Be on the lookout for escaped prisoner in St. Martin Parish

Leroy Begnaud III escaped from Rayne City Jail this morning

Rayne Police Chief Carroll Stelly says 29-year-old LeRoy "Chip" Begnaud was a trusty assisting with maintenance and cleaning around the police station when he escaped this morning.

Begnaud is a resident of rural St. Martinville. The St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office is on the lookout for him in the area.

Chief Stelly said that he believes Begnaud's escape was assisted by an outside party.

Begnaud is described as wearing a red and black shirt with a hood, black pants, and black-and-red Under Armor shoes. Stelly said Begnaud may have shaved his beard before his escape.

If you know Begnaud's whereabouts, call 911 or the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office at (337) 394-3012.
