St. Martin 4-H program receives Walmart grant

The St. Martin Parish 4-H program has been awarded an $8,000 Louisiana Fit 4 the Future Walmart Healthy Living Grant for the 2014-2015 year.
For the second year, St. Martin Parish 4-H will have a healthy living educational programming focus, with an emphasis on fitness. The grant will enable the 4-H program to continue current programming, and expand efforts to reach more people and give youth more opportunities to serve as healthy living mentor leaders. The healthy living initiative’s goal is to develop a healthy living educational plan to reach youth, volunteers, and community members that will educate about the importance of active living, healthy eating, the science of healthy living, and ways to incorporate these ideas into a family’s daily routine.
A healthy living advisory committee consisting of youth and adults and 4-H agents Laura M. Brumbaugh and Hope Guidry will be created to ensure that the grant projects are completed.
The grant will enable the 4-H program to offer the following opportunities to 4-H youth, as well as the community as a whole: healthy living educational opportunities, a Healthy Living Fun Day workshop, Achievement Day hands-on learning stations focused on healthy living, the second annual Gleaux 5K Race and Fun Run, a Wellness Bingo Challenge, a healthy living expo coordinated by the Jr. Leader club, as well as other fun events that will encourage social media usage.
“We are really excited to receive this grant and be able to continue offering our youth of St. Martin parish opportunities to not only learn about leading a healthy lifestyle, but practice leading one through the Wellness Bingo challenge and the 5K Race and Fun Run,” said 4-H agent Laura M. Brumbaugh. “Through this grant we will be able to expand the 5K race and offer community members a health fair expo geared towards youth.”
