Many vie for parish posts

St. Martin Parish voters, along with those throughout the state, will face a full slate of candidates for local and statewide offices in the primary election set for Oct. 24.
All seven of the state offices have drawn multiple candidates and the ballot will also include hopefuls seeking seats on the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE), legislative and judicial races as well as parish offices.
At the parish level Sheriff Ronny Theriot, seeking a fourth term, faces challengers Corey Broussard, Albert “Buz” LeBlanc and Brian P. Theriot.
Clerk of Court Becky Patin is being opposed by Espinola Alexander-Quinn while the race for assessor includes Todd Dugas and Delores L. Bourda.
Assessor Lawrence Patin is retiring at the end of his current term.
Six of the nine seats on the Parish Council are being contested. Only Jason Willis of Dist. 3, Neil Thibodeaux of Dist. 4 and Jill Hebert of Dist. 6 are unopposed.
“Coach” Carroll Delahoussaye of Dist. 1 and Dean Dore of Dist. 9 are term limited while Craig Gregory of Dist. 7 is stepping down at the end of his term.
Incumbents Lisa Nelson of Dist. 2, Clay Courville of Dist. 5 and Mickey “Meko” Robin of Dist. 8 all face opponents.
Three candidates – all Republicans – are in the running to fill the unexpired term of the late James McClelland for the Division D judgeship in the 16th Judicial District. Seeking the seat are Eddie Guidry of St. Martinville, Nicholas LaRocca of Morgan City and Lewis Pitman of New Iberia.
